This article gives a practical overview of normative methods for restriction of hazardous substances (RoHS) evaluation and RoHS requirements, alternative methods and guidance on sampling strategies, measurement, and interpretation. Special attention was taken on spectral methods and possible interferences. The variety and complexity of real samples require good knowledge of spectral methods and its limitations. Alternatives and also methods under development are mentioned, especially for speciation of brominated flame retardants.
