Since the 1980s, research programs on high value materials based on renewable resources have boomed as a result of a larger demand for packaging materials with better environmental balance and/or new original properties such as biodegradability, versatility according to physico-chemical conditions, controlled release or adsroption, etc. These so called "bio-plastics" open new applications in the field of biodegradable and/or active packaging.
