Lignocellulosic biomass for conversion to ethanol can be obtained from three sources, traditional standing timber, biomass crops and waste biomass. Standing timber costs approximately $40 per tonne, a cost which is variable depending upon demand and timber quality (Foody & Foody, 1991). For the purpose of ethanol production, lower quality woods are quite acceptable. However, it is difficult to envision how ethanol production processes could potentially compete with lumber or pulp production for standing timber, given the great difference in value of the product.
