Three years has elapsed since the first part of the Atlas was published (HOUK 2003). The original concept was to continue with the next group of taxa, the genus Cyclotella and genera separated from it, i.e. Puncticulata and Discostella. However, it was realized that the state of taxonomy had moved forward, and that many important taxa from the families Melosiraceae and Aulacoseiraceae had not been included in the first part, especially the fossil taxa and those not observed in Europe. Many of these taxa were then observed and investigated by us in LM and SEM, mainly from diatom collections of the world, and often the types. So it was decided to continue with this group and bring in the results of these observations. We also aimed to consider often misinterpreted taxa or those usually neglected in contemporary literature in order to help field workers and those who deal with fossil diatoms, and also, to bring back into general use some old names where necessary. The list of the taxa from families presented in these two parts of the Atlas is still incomplete. Many taxa described from Asia, mainly from China, Japan and the Asian part of Russia, and from the American continents are not here because we had not the material at our disposal. However, we present here several new Aulacoseira taxa from diatomites of North Bohemia and some recent taxa from New Zealand.
